Pedro Herrera's practice focuses on public sector employee benefits law. Working with Bob Sugarman and Ken Harrison, he provides counsel to the boards of trustees of governmental employee benefit plans that provide pension and health benefits for public sector employees, including general employees, police officers and fire fighters. Pedro assists the trustees in complying with all regulatory and legislative matters governing the funds, and provides legal opinions and analysis in a wide array of ancillary matters.
Pedro's practice also includes representing multiemployer Taft-Hartley pension and welfare benefit plans, advising on all relevant ERISA, Internal Revenue Code and trust law principles. He counsels clients concerning fiduciary responsibility matters such as conflict issues, duties of directed trustees, co-fiduciary liability, and the application of prohibited transaction rules. He also represents unions in all facets of labor law and litigation.
Mr. Herrera was born and raised in Miami, Florida. He is an alumnus of Christopher Columbus High School where he was an accomplished scholar athlete. Pedro went on to attend the University of Miami.
Pedro is a summa cum laude graduate of the University of Miami and a cum laude graduate of the University of Pennsylvania Law School, where he was an editor on the Journal of International Economic Law. Mr. Herrera also received a Certificate in Business and Public Policy from the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania, where he completed coursework geared towards providing an improved understanding of the relationship and strategic interaction of the private and public sectors.
Mr. Herrera is active in the Miami community. He is a member of the Cuban American Bar Association and the Coral Gables Bar Association. He volunteers his time working with Amigos for Kids, an organization providing opportunities for at-risk and impoverished youth in the greater Miami community. He is also currently pending initiation at the Kiwanis Club of Little Havana.
Pedro is fluent in Spanish. He has worked at Sugarman & Susskind since 2004.
